YES - The Carranza Memorial was a celebrated backwoods novelty in the days when I was first allowed to drive unsupervised but didn't have anywhere to go. It was close enough to where I grew up that I could remember how to get there without directions but far enough into the Pine Barrens that one couldn't help but be slightly concerned about the near absolute silence that greeted you there. I'm sure the fact that the only nearby facility was a boy's juvenile detention center enveloped in dense forest contributed to the sense of isolation.

It wasn't until recently though that I learned Carranza was a celebrated Mexican aviator, as opposed I guess to your average ill-fated Mexican aviator. I always found it strange that his life came to an end in a middle of nowhere that seemed so far from his home, but I suppose that 's the nature of air travel's most unfortunate conclusions.

Have you been to the Memorial? I assume so but must ask.

Ran into Mark while we were there! Showed me around and pointed out the new plantings. You've done a lot of great work. Looks like there are a few more maples to fell, but otherwise it should be ready for spring.

Your Lordship:

Indeed, the text has a certain Whitmanesque nature to it. Non-rhyming toponyms interspersed with lovely descriptions of natural structures within a working style of prose: The sun had set on their frantic efforts to corral and scale the plant.

You have a keen eye for the subtle and hidden value of seemingly commonplace recordings. Thank you for sharing that ability with all of us!

Did you check out the garden in front of Suningive? We trimmed everything back and Mark wants to plant some native pineland plants.

A Loafer's Manifesto is my new Evasion. Except with more deodorant and less prison stints and syringes. brassai's work on henry miller's bed bug, whore mongering, tramp trot through paris is a new grab.

Good read. Thanks for showing what your casual attire would be in an office setting. The vest seems to compliment the jeans you're wearing.

There's been some good scholarship on Monument Cemetery. See, for instance, Robert Torchia's "No Strangers to the Ravages of Death: John Neagle's Portrait of Dr. John Abraham Elkinton," Nineteenth Century 18, no. 2 (Fall 1998): 12-19; and Dell Upton, Another City (2008). For what it's worth, there's a cadre of people in Penn's preservation program who are interested in this stuff.
